Happy birthday Samaara

I had a great time at this birthday event for a client whom I had known for more than a decade; once again he has contacted me to do a shoot for his 2nd child's birthday.

The place was set in an Indian restaurant called Jewel of India which is actually well tucked in a building beside Mustafa Centre.  Personally I had not been to this place and it's a pretty beautiful restaurant indeed.

Here are some shots taken at this event.  Once again, happy birthday Samaara!

Food Photography - First Milestone

I decided to do some cooking and have the journey of food photography to be done on a minimalist set-up basis.  For the moment, these are still what I would address as the local, Asian cuisine mixed with variety of simple preparation.

Do stay tuned for more of this genre of my works but here's a couple of samples.

I can be found on Instagram here too: @cyrusshutter

Food Photography trail

Got a word that my self-cooked and photographed fried rice resembles Japanese fried rice when it actually isn't on my Instagram.  This is what I've been doing when I am not wielding my Big Daddy for shoots.

Been on a series of mini food photography personal projects hence I've not written much for the past 'season' (if that's a right word fit).  Let's hope this pulls off to something good.

Happy Birthday Jvann - 1st Birthday

Today's the actual day done for a baby's 1st birthday at their home.  A beautiful baby who has just turned one and this small party is held by the parents for their family and close friends & colleagues.

A beautiful decorated cake lays which is always so tempting to taste too!

With the guidance of his parents, Jvann was able to grasp hold of the knife to cut his very first birthday cake.  A very beautiful and yet simple celebration!

Product Photography for small items

Did a few product photography recently for a blogshop which deals with clothing, electronics and some gift items.

It was relatively manageable under controlled lighting conditions so there, I manged to run through it quickly.

Some shots are up for viewing.  More can be found in my portfolio: http://cyrusshutter.wix.com/product

Martial Arts: Makoto Aikido

I had the opportunity to shoot at this school, Makoto Aikido which training was situated in a quiet town of Cassia.  The school shared the same place as the Singapore Judo Federation which was one of those older buildings which you don't find many around Singapore.

Considering the studentship size, I have to move cautiously so as not to be hit by the students who were practicing their sparring.  A foreign instructor, Simon Puffett was in and was leading the training today.

First half of the lessons were bare hands sparring while the second half were covered with the used of the ken.

Certainly an eye-opener for me as the art was to neutralise rather than an offensive art compared to several martial arts out there.  They ended with their celebration as that day happened to be their anniversary.

On-Location Bridal Theme: Teti

Today we have a master who was willing to bring us on-location for the training; since it was raining; I decided to take the wheel to get everyone to the venue.

Zamrud was the master who came with his assistant, Yarzid, and taught us the basis of guidance.  For myself, it was a re-sharpening of the skills that I had adopted and practiced all these while.

Weather was a little drizzly but we decided to do the shoot in the heart of Little India anyway.  Our model, Teti was very accomodating and we were able to achieve the shots well.

There after, we did a post-shoot review with some simple tips from Zamrud at City Square before we split up and called it a day.

Not alot of perfect shots but here's a couple:

On Location - Yukata Theme

Linked up via Zech for this on-location shoot, we are doing an on-location shoot on a Saturday afternoon. Weather looks safe for an outdoor shoot this evening.

Since the new flats are built up, we had to take a detour route to get to the exact location; it's quite a short walk fortunately.  Though the weather was tuned down, it was locked at the cooler climate.

Location selected and we decided to shoot in the "lily among the thorns" area, namely, the long grassy area before moving to the famous red bridge.  By the time our shoot was done, the sky light had fallen to darkness so it was time to move off.

Some extracts taken from the shoot:

A camera-less day

"What would I do with my phone?" was the first thing that flashed my mind on such a day where my usual camera isn't within my reach.

Of course I have not forgotten that my phone has a camera.  So with a decent app, and some creative juice popped in, here I go on Instagram with my first Black and White series via a mobile device.

For those who have and like to see photos on the move, here's where you can find me on Instagram:

Studio bridal shoot at Nishka Events

Thanks to Jeny of Nishka Events and Edmund, we have got this opportunity to do a shoot at a studio setup.  Being an on-location photographer, I have always been shooting outdoors where external light factors play a factor.

Shooting under controlled lighting environment makes everything all so different as I know exactly where the light source is coming from.  From the past experiences in portraiture, I have once again an opportunity to shoot under a full personal choreography with Edmund's guidance.

Jeny has been so hospitable, Nikayla being such a great model and the magical strokes under the hands of Jolin as the MUA.

Here are some extracts of the shoot:

Punk Theme: Rynx & Sabelle

Another on-location shoot organised with Zech today; this time, it's a little different.

Punk.

The weather was great and it was the first time I've met Sabelle; she certainly looks pretty young.  All well dressed and we are ready to go.

After the first round, we did for Rynx as she arrived at a later time.  Nevertheless, great weather still keep the shoot workable.

Here are some highlights of the shoot:

On-Location: Khym & Sarah

A series of 2 shoots were done today in the hot weather of Penang; the first on-location shoot done in a foreign country.

The first was for a cosplay theme called Natusume Yuujinchou which Sarah took the male lead and Khym took the female lead.  Some shots require me to be in the water but it's the first time I encountered a leech on my toe since I had to be in there barefooted.

After a couple of hours' shoot, switch theme and the gals went back to change into another attire.

The scenery had to be something which compliments the femininity side so I made good use of the garden, the garland of flowers growing around the framework near the entrance as well purplish coloured leaves of waist height bushes.

The shoot was over before dinner and we all headed to Straits Quay for some food and drinks while catching up.

Thanks once again to Khym and Sarah, and Sarah's sister, Hannah for helping out with some of the props!

Floral Theme Shoot@Kampung Buangkok

Kampung Buangkok, the very last standing village in the very urbanised Singapore.

I visited this place once again after 3 years.  This time, thanks to Zech for organising this shoot along with Leonard.

The theme was floral attire in a village setting so we managed to find our way there by foot after a bus journey of about 15ish minutes from Buangkok.

The path was hidden as usual, so I had to take the foot forward to find the exact entrance through some vegetation - there were walkable paths.  Afterall, the jungle and great outdoors are my greatest ally when I'm alone.

Weather started to turn rainy soon after we set up, but we managed to do some shoots with a beautiful flower-adorned gate of a Malay household who were very kind not to chase us away given that it was just outside their humble abode.

The rain turned heavy after a short pause but we still managed to get a final group shot before wrapping up; it was way too heavy for any outdoor shoots. Despite being sweaty, dirty and all the muddy medals I earned from on-location shoots, it's great to learn that everyone had fun.

Thanks to Zech, the wonderful gals, Rynx, Blue, Ten, Xin and the very bubbly Khym for making it possible!

Punggol Neighbourhood Watch Day / NPC Opening 2013

This event was held in conjunction with the grand opening of the Punggol NPC which was graced by DPM Teo Chee Hian.

NPCC cadets could be seen on duty helping out the real constables who were manning several booths around the shelter where many parents brought their family, and not forgetting those who came specially to see their favourite celebrities along with the preview of the new police serial drama, C.L.I.F 2, which will be airing on Channel 8 very soon.

Among the celebrities include Aileen Tan, Li Nanxing, Joanne Peh, Rui En (yes, her fan club was there in warm support of her) and Shane.

Clubsnap Nikon Exclusive Talk / Phootshoot

I recently attended this simple and short event which was organised by a local photography forum.

Since it was catered for Nikon users, I had the opportunity for some practice.

Here's a couple of shots taken at the session:

Ais - Fashion theme shoot

Another opportunity to work with a great model Ais, who had been ever sporting.

Weather had turned searing in the outdoors so we had to move indoors for the rest of the shoot.  The common hall could be converted into a mini-studio with the right setup.

We had a great time shooting along with Leonard, Zech and Kean.  Thanks to Leonard for putting this together and Ais for being such a great model!
